Causes of Numbness in the Feet

Numbness in the feet can occur when there is a problem with how the nervous system is communicating with the feet. Sometimes, crossing your leg while sitting can compress a nerve, resulting in numbness. This may feel like your foot is “asleep,” but the numbness generally dissipates when you stand up and move around. If a lack of feeling in the feet is accompanied by a burning, prickling, or tingling sensation, more serious problems may be the cause. One condition is peripheral neuropathy, which can occur as the result of nerve damage from diabetes or other systemic diseases. Spinal problems may also be factors contributing to numbness in the feet. The two most common reasons are a herniated disc and spinal stenosis. If numbness in your feet has become a common occurrence that negatively affects your daily activities, it is suggested that you consult with a chiropodist who can diagnose the cause and offer the correct treatment options.
