Laser Treatment for Fungal Nails

Laser therapy has become an increasingly common treatment for fungal toenail infections. Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, can be difficult to treat. Topical medications, which are applied directly to the infected toenails, are often not very effective because they can’t penetrate the nail. Oral antifungal medications, while more effective, can cause various unwanted side effects, and patients taking these medications require close monitoring. Laser treatment can often be faster, safer, and more effective for treating onychomycosis.

During laser therapy, a concentrated beam of light is aimed at the infected toenail. The light penetrates the nail and kills the fungus underneath it. Although it may take several sessions and time for new, healthy toenails to grow out, many patients find that the results are well worth it. Side effects from laser treatment are typically minimal. Some patients may experience mild pain, redness, or bleeding around the treated nails. In the majority of cases, these side effects can be easily managed. Laser treatment can also be safely combined with topical or oral medications for optimal results.

Left untreated, fungal toenail infections can sometimes progress and worsen, spread to surrounding toenails, or spread to the feet. If you notice symptoms of onychomycosis in your nails, such as thickening, discoloration, or the nail separating from the nailbed, don’t hesitate to reach out to a chiropodist near you. This specialist can diagnose the condition and determine the best course of treatment for you.
