Swelling during pregnancy, particularly in the legs, ankles, feet, and fingers, is a common occurrence. This condition is known as edema and is often more pronounced towards the end of pregnancy and at the end of the day. Swelling while pregnant is primarily caused by the body retaining more water than usual. Hot weather, prolonged standing, and weight gain can contribute to fluid buildup and result in swollen legs, ankles, and feet. Experts suggest that pregnant women experiencing edema avoid prolonged standing, wear comfortable shoes and socks that won't constrict the feet, and elevate the legs whenever possible. Drinking plenty of water helps the body flush out excess fluid and reduces swelling. Taking walks or performing foot exercises can also aid in improving blood circulation and preventing calf muscle cramps. While gradual swelling is generally considered normal and harmless, sudden and severe swelling could indicate a more serious condition and should not be ignored. If you are experiencing abnormal swelling of the feet while pregnant, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a chiropodist.
